I am very pleased to announce the release of the new, innovative and improved SDL Trados Studio 2015.
It has been 21 months since our last launch; it was September 2013 when we launched the Studio 2014 version. During this time, our teams have not only continued to enhance Studio 2014 with 2 service packs, which delivered additional features, enhancements and the introduction of Language Cloud, but they have been busy working on our newest release which brings some very exciting new features.
Of course we could not help but have a marketing theme attached to the release. It might look like a trivial exercise, but it helps us when communicating with our customers to present the numerous new features in a clearer manner. This means everybody can easily identify and understand what’s new in our product, with a focus on 3 pillars: quality, productivity and personalization.
We wanted to come up with something more imaginative, but practicality prevailed in the end and we felt that those 3 pillars were the best way to quickly showcase what is new in Studio 2015.
I am not going to go into lots of details in this blog. We have many webinars, web pages and opportunities to discover all the new features in action; but I wanted to highlight some of the most important items. In the end everything revolves around the continued pressure on deadlines, costs and prices which are some of the key drivers in our industry… and how Studio 2015 can help.
Translating faster is important but we want to make sure we help everyone in the localization flow to maintain the highest quality. Quality of course is down to the individual skills of translators and reviewers and our technology simply supports some of the required tasks. With quality in mind, SDL Trados Studio 2015 introduces some key new features.
Firstly, a feature which we struggled to name, but eventually decided to call Retrofit. SDL Trados Studio 2015 allows a review to take place in the target translated file which can then be imported back into Studio (retrofitted … hence the name). This is a much better way for review to take place, allowing for a better experience. Once the review is complete, it can be easily imported back into Studio 2015, allowing all those changes to become part of the translation memory. Ultimately this helps translation quality both in terms of providing better reviews, which should lead to better translation results, but also allows for all those changes being brought back into Studio 2015, ready for the next job.
Moving on, Studio 2015 Professional introduces Translation Quality Assessment (TQA), a structured approach to measure quality across the supply chain. With the rise of quality standards and ISO in the translation world, TQA enables a model based and consistent analysis of translation quality. Errors can be categorized and a system can be built to measure quality. This is a great feature for agencies and teams who are embracing official quality standards.
The last quality feature I would like to highlight is AutoCorrect. This is a feature that has been requested by many of our users and brings Studio 2015 closer to the writing experience in Microsoft Word. With 160 languages supported, it can fix many little typos, saving time and helping maintain the highest quality standards.
Helping you translate as quickly as possible was always at the core of our product. Internally at SDL the name for our team is ‘Translation Productivity’, so it is certainly one of our top priorities. Studio 2015 introduces lots of new features to achieve this but the shining star is the new SDL AutoSuggest 2.0.
We introduced AutoSuggest in 2009 as a way to speed up translation, reducing key strokes and making the most of the existing translation memory when there was not a 100% match. Studio 2015 takes this to a new level, not only will Studio continue to suggest from the AutoSuggest Dictionary, but it will propose suggestions from fuzzy and concordance matches. This should really help accelerate translation.
The new AutoSuggest does more. I believe it can transform the way of working for a relatively new area for translation: the interaction with machine translation. AutoSuggest 2.0 introduces a new method of leveraging this tool and helps maximize the capabilities of Language Cloud by offering machine translation results ‘as you type’. I have been trying it out and in my experience it has proven more useful than having to post-edit a segment. It felt like a very different way of working, less ’intrusive’ with many parts of segments and words being proposed to me that I did not have to type in full.
There are many more features in SDL Trados Studio 2015 to enhance your productivity. There’s the ability to reverse Translation Memories and mix regional variations quicker, as well as bookmarks and symbols insertion. A feature which I think a lot of you will be happy to hear about is there is now the ability to integrate OCR for scanned PDF documents. We have also worked on improvements in MultiTerm 2015 to speed up your terminology work. But I will stop here and move on to the final theme!
Studio is extremely customizable and with the powerful SDL OpenExchange platform everything is possible (almost!). But we are continuing to increase the ability to tailor our software for the many ways our individual users prefer. Studio 2015, which boasts a refreshed user interface, can be personalized further with a customizable ribbon menu. It is possible to add frequently used features into the ribbon or remove visualization of others for a more streamlined experience. Ultimately the better Studio feels the higher translation efficiency.
I have made it to the end. But this is just the beginning, as this blog is just a high level overview of what’s in store with Studio 2015. I believe everyone, whether a translator, reviewer, project manager or business owner will find useful innovations with our latest release.
In Studio we have also added new User Interface languages: Russian, Italian and Korean which also help with the overall level of personalization.
Before concluding, I want to thank the thousands of customers that have already pre-ordered their Studio 2015 license. I wish you all happy translating with our new tool!
