SDL Trados Studio 2017 is here! I am extremely pleased to be writing this blog announcing the launch of the latest version of the industry’s most popular translation software.
In the last few weeks I’ve had the opportunity to show the beta version of SDL Trados Studio 2017 to many people at events around the world, and the feedback has been incredibly positive.
Like our customers, the people attending these events were very diverse. From the ATA which is predominantly a freelance translator conference to our very own LSP Partner event which is unsurprisingly attended by… Language Service Providers and finally Tekom, which I see as pretty much an event for large corporations. Attending these events was a great reminder of how many different people rely on our software and how different their requirements are.
The innovation we are bringing with Studio 2017 is designed to make the difference. It will make the difference for all these people, no matter what role they play within the industry, for increasing translation productivity.
Let’s take a look at some of the key innovations in the new Studio 2017.
upLIFT technology – the difference is clear to see
First of all we have significantly improved how the translation memory works. Since 2009 we have added smarter ways to leverage your previously translated content, with features like AutoSuggest and ContextMatch.
In SDL Trados Studio 2017 we’ve introduced a new way to make the most of your previous work; upLIFT, the new translation memory technology which not only speeds up your translation work but helps you maintain consistency.
This new technology enables you to not only match segments but also accurately pair up fragments in the source with fragments in the target. The great thing about upLIFT is that you can continue translating in the same way you have always been doing up to now – however you will now receive many more suggestions. What’s even better is you will also be able to see the context of these suggestions, so you can be confident in the suggestions quality and if it’s appropriate to use.
As I previously mentioned, with upLIFT technology in Studio 2017 we are not changing the way you translate, but the amount of work you will need to do will be greatly reduced.
AdaptiveMT – the difference is you
The second big innovation is the introduction of AdaptiveMT; machine translation that can adapt itself to how you translate, creating a personal, private and unique engine for you, which can help you translate faster. Whether you pre-translate an entire document using machine translation and edit it at the end or you use the machine translation suggestions via AutoSuggest, the amount of work you will need to do will be reduced and the machine translation results will become much more accurate.
With AdaptiveMT, it is also the beginning of a number of innovative services which we will deliver via the cloud. Not only will we continue to innovate and enhance SDL Trados Studio in its desktop form but through cloud technology we will be able to offer innovative services which will further enhance your translation experience.

What else is new in SDL Trados Studio 2017?
There are many more new features in Studio 2017 including a simpler translation flow for single documents, the ability to merge segments with a hard paragraph return and a new interface in SDL MultiTerm 2017 to simplify terminology management work.
We have also focused on the details that matter in Studio 2017, where we have made nice changes that simplify or make a task more intuitive. This is one of the key focuses for our company. CAT Tools can look pretty sophisticated (or daunting…) when dealing with many different file types and fitting in very different processes for different customers. But we are determined to try and simplify these tasks and continue to evolve the product in this direction so you, the user, can focus on what matters.
This release is not just about the product software. One key thing we are also doing is making sure there are plenty of ways for you to get in touch and get help from us. These currently include:
- Live chat on our website
- Monthly webinars
- SDL Trados Roadshow
- ‘How to’ videos on YouTube
- Social Media – Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn
- Our new SDL Community
If you find you need more structured support, we have a number of options to get a support contract, where you can get our professional client support team to help you within a specific time-frame. No matter how you choose to get in touch with us, we are trying to be as accessible as we can be.
I hope you enjoy using SDL Trados Studio 2017 and the difference it makes, as well as being wonderfully surprised by the productivity boosts the new features will bring to you.
