The release of SDL Trados Studio 2017 is just around the corner and I’m excited that our users will get to experience the latest innovations in translation technology very soon. This includes features such as our revolutionary new AdaptiveMT, where machine translation will now continuously learn and improve in real-time as you translate, and state-of-the-art translation memory technology called upLIFT, which will help you get the maximum output from your translation memories.
I work on the SDL AppStore team and our aim for the new release is to make the transition to SDL Trados Studio 2017 for our existing users as effortless a task as it can be. How? By updating the free to download Studio Migration Utility application so that you can migrate your assets such as projects and SDL AppStore plug-ins over to your new translation software in just a couple of minutes, and start working on it as soon as it’s released.
What does the Studio Migration Utility do?
Originally published on the app store last year to coincide with the launch of SDL Trados Studio 2015, the app was developed to make the migration from older versions of Studio to Studio 2015 more intuitive for users by automating much of the process. Now, Studio Migration Utility has been updated for Studio 2017 and also includes the ability to migrate your SDL AppStore plugins if you’re upgrading from Studio 2015 (meaning that you don’t need to download them all again from the app store).
With this app, you can migrate the following assets from one version of SDL Trados Studio to another without having to do it manually yourself:
- Customer lists
- Translation memories
- Language resource templates
- SDL AppStore plugins (only between Studio 2015 and Studio 2017).
When you download this free application from the app store, you will find it in the ribbon of Studio 2017 (or Studio 2015/2014). Once opened, it takes you through a simple step-by-step wizard which takes a couple of minutes at most. That’s it, and you can start working in Studio 2017 straight away.

Who is the tool useful for and why?
If you’re one of our many existing users who has already purchased an upgrade (or plan to in the future), you may well want to start working with Studio 2017 as soon you have it. The installation itself is quick and easy but most users will also want to transfer all of their projects they’re currently working on, TMs, apps and more over to the new version before they can get started.
Although I’m not a translation professional myself, I can imagine that upgrading your translation software is a little similar to buying a new phone a few years ago. In a time before smart phones saved your contacts onto the cloud, making them available on any new device you use (e.g. iCloud for iPhone users), you’d have to input all of your contacts from your old phone to your new phone manually. It was even worse if you lost your phone and had to ask all your friends and family for their numbers again!
With the Studio Migration Utility, this manual task is no longer an issue as the tool has been designed to do it for you. Just like phones, we have made the process of switching to the new version of your CAT tool smarter. It’s not cloud based so therefore you can’t migrate between separate computers with it, but it works perfectly well when both your old and new versions of Studio are installed on the same lap top or desktop machine.
The newly updated Studio Migration Utility app is ready to download on the app store today, so I recommend you download it before or on the day you install SDL Trados Studio 2017 so that you can jump straight into your work whilst making the most of the great, new features!
